Ballet is the foundation of all dance genres. Students are introduced to and trained in key techniques which ultimately build strength and body tone allowing movement with precision and grace.
The Jazz dance style draws upon the technical structure of Ballet but focuses on highly energetic and upbeat music from Broadway showtunes to Hip-Hop. Improvisation plays a large role in Jazz dance as every jazz dancer is encouraged to execute moves in their own way. Topics additionally include isolation and suspension techniques.
The Hip Hop style of dance is a more technically free, funkier derivative of jazz. Hip Hop steps are closely tied with those seen in current television music videos and "pop culture". Like Jazz, the music is highly energetic and much freedom of movement is incorporated. Students in our Hip Hop classes come away above all with a solid sense of rhythm.
The Jazz style of dance is what is seen in many Broadway shows such as "Cats". It is a more structured, theatrical/stage style of dance. Hip Hop is a fast paced, "street" style dance form commonplace in music videos and commericals. Justin Timberlake and J Lo would be typical examples of Hip Hop artists.
The tap style of dancing focuses on using the feet as percussive instruments creating a variety of rhythmic patterns and beats. Tap dancers wear special shoes with metal plates at the ball and heel of shoe allowing them to create the "tap" upon hitting the hardwood floor.
